Picosecond pulsed surface texturing

Picosecond lasers have been used in many applications and on many materials. For instance, SS304 is modified by picosecond pulse energies of 0.89-2.08 μJ at 100 ps [28]. It has been shown that for energy below 1 μJ, the periodic surface is visible but not significant, whereas a remelting and periodic bandings are seen for energies above 1.05 μJ [28].

The surface of titanium nitride has been altered by a picosecond Nd:YAG laser [29]. It has been shown that at intensities higher than 0.2 J/cm2, full melting occurs; whereas at a lower intensity, periodical surface structures with micro- and nanofeatures are developed.

Al, Ti, and SS316 are also reported to be modified by picosecond lasers. Zhao et al. [30] ablated stainless steel by a 10 ps Q-switched Nd:VAN pulsed laser to investigate ultrafast micromachining properties and optimize the performance parameters. Zhao et al. [31] irradiated amorphous Ge2Sb2Te5 films by a picosecond laser to study the morphology and crystalline phase changes. (GeTe)x(Sb2Te3)y alloys with ultrashort phase change are considered as strong candidates to be used in phase-change memories. The HAZs formed by picosecond lasers are almost small and negligible due to very short interaction times with the material. Hafiz et al. [32] have used a picosecond laser for laser micropolishing of Inconel 718 (IN718).

Laser Hair removal is a process of using light at the right wavelengths to target the color pigments in hair follicles (the root of the hair). The principle on which it works is known as selective photo-thermolysis, a fancy way of saying that the light selectively breaks cell structures of a specific color through the generation of heat. In the case of laser hair removal, these are basal stem cells that lead to hair growth from the follicle. This helps de-activate the follicles from future growth. When we say selective, it also means that the laser does not affect other structures around it, which includes the skin. Laser hair reduction does not give desirable results in a single session. We must repeat the procedure multiple times to target hair follicles in different phases of growth. A total of 6-8 sessions are usually enough to permanently reduce 80-100% of hair growth.

Traditional laser or IPL technology employ short impulses of approximately 2-300 milliseconds, applying a vast amount of energy (12-120 J/cm2). Energy is transported to the hair root through melanin, where warmth of 65-72°Celsius is produced. Energy reaches the root of the hair follicle solely through melanin. Skin and red blood cells have a similar absorption coefficient as melanin and therefore also absorb the high levels of energy produced by the laser and IPL methods.

 

Super hair removal technology, on the other hand, utilizes the melanin path only partially (50%)., and combining In-Motion technology, gently warms the skin helping penetrate down to the follicles which produce hair growth.

 

Research has shown that a slower, but longer heating process is considerably more effective for permanent hair removal than high and short levels of energy. Therefore, when using Super hair removal, the device is passed over the tissue multiple times (in motion) using low energy but a high rate of repetition (up to 10Hz, i.e. 10 times per second) instead of using the traditional method with single, high-energy impulses.
